Many leaders want to uphold quality and set a strong example. They move fast, maintain control, and often treat delegation as something they’ll get to once the pressure lifts or the stakes are lower. But beneath the drive and discipline, there’s often a deeper reason they hold on so tightly and do not want to delegate: they don’t fully trust themselves to let go.
That’s what makes delegation so difficult for high-performing leaders. The challenge isn’t always about bandwidth or the team’s capabilities. Delegation requires belief in your ability to let go without losing direction. It calls for a willingness to release ownership, not just manage output.
